●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤ8) WHERE DID ALL THESE NAMES *COME* FROM??
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ In an ultra-small nutshell, Sphinx, FA's search engine. Add a grateful dip
●●●●ㅤㅤof the ears to Browse too (under the hood, same thing).
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ When we use the Search page to look for stories or poetry, what Sphinx
●●●●ㅤㅤgives us are pages of search results: Links to stories or poetry. Sphinx is a
●●●●ㅤㅤdocument search engine, not a DBMS, and it is nothing less than excellent.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Along with the links are usernames. Is it possible to use Sphinx to find not
●●●●ㅤㅤstories and poetry per se, but the *names* of everyone on FA who writes
●●●●ㅤㅤ[anything]?
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Technically speaking, yes. Practically speaking, not without putting Sphinx
●●●●ㅤㅤthrough sheer hell (since it's not designed or configed to do that at all).
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ But back in 2012, some methods were found to get Sphinx to do this, mainly
●●●●ㅤㅤby way of retrieving and processing an awesome number of search results pages.
●●●●ㅤㅤOut of that came usernames. But far from everyone. But enough to install
●●●●ㅤㅤthe FAWD on FA.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ (To put it differently, no hacking of the FA DB was involved. Sphinx was
●●●●ㅤㅤasked politely for names, and it delivered names. Just took a lot of highly
●●●●ㅤㅤcomplex asking.)
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Then taking what was learned from Sphinx, Browse was studied. That's
●●●●ㅤㅤanother way to get pages of search results of stories or poetry. And usernames.
●●●●ㅤㅤUpshot: By late 2012, the usernames of almost everyone on FA who writes had
●●●●ㅤㅤbeen found. The FAWD took a *massive* update.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Then serendipity struck in early 2015, in the form of finding a Tor archive of
●●●●ㅤㅤ[nearly] all posts on FA. No idea who dun it or how, but hey, this should make it
●●●●ㅤㅤeasy to find everyone on FA who writes, no?
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ No, it was a king-helluva rough hack, since that was a BIG archive to plow
●●●●ㅤㅤthrough. But a large pile of new names were found, then added to the FAWD.
●●●●ㅤㅤAlmost complete got very close to totally complete. It'll have to do.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ And here we are. Every Friday, an update run is done. Task: Ask Sphinx to
●●●●ㅤㅤfind all new stories and poetry posted to FA during that past week. From that
●●●●ㅤㅤcome new usernames to add to the FAWD.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Not joking: If the FAWD ever does an avatar redesign, art of a certain giant
●●●●ㅤㅤeroded Egyptian anthro statue is very seriously in the running.

●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤ7) THE ARTIST TYPE ON MY MAIN PAGE, AND WHAT'S SHOWING ON MY LIST
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤENTRY, ARE NOT THE SAME. WHY?
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ When someone is listed, several things happen. An entry is made into the
●●●●ㅤㅤFAWD DB, and a list page on FA takes an update [to show a new name].
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Also, a quick visit is done to that person's main page. Join date and artist
●●●●ㅤㅤtype are copied, and commish info and species. They all show up on the list entry.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ (Not everyone around here who knows how to type is a writer. A list entry
●●●●ㅤㅤshould say so.)
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ What the FAWD is counting on is that very, very, *very* few people will ever
●●●●ㅤㅤchange their artist type. The artist type that's on someone's main page will
●●●●ㅤㅤalmost certainly stay that way until the heat-death of the universe.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ So there is no software in place to regularly check artist type. Ie., look at
●●●●ㅤㅤ+40,000 main pages to see if artist type has changed. Only FA's server could do
●●●●ㅤㅤthat, and without even breathing hard either.
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●
]●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Upshot: If you have changed your artist type, and you see that your list
●●●●ㅤㅤentry is now wrong, don't hesitate, and send a message. And it will be edited on
●●●●ㅤㅤthe spot.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ This is not completely satisfactory. But until or if the FAWD gets a footpaw
●●●●ㅤㅤthrough the door of FA's server room--let's not necessarily hold our breath--this
●●●●ㅤㅤis the way it has to work.

●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤ6) A FEW LIST ENTRIES ARE LABELLED AS NON-SEARCHABLE. WHAT
●●●●ㅤㅤ DOES THIS MEAN?
●●●●
●●●●
●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ When we create a username, FA gives us almost complete freedom to type
●●●●ㅤㅤin whatever we want. This is fine.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ However, Sphinx, FA's search engine, has rules. You can't just type in
●●●●ㅤㅤanything and expect Sphinx to do a successful search.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ In a few rare cases people have created usernames that break some of
●●●●ㅤㅤSphinx's rules. Meaning that the search query links in their list entry don't work.
●●●●ㅤㅤThis is not fine.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ The main rule that causes trouble is length of a search string. It has to be
●●●●ㅤㅤlonger than two letters. There are a number of two-letter usernames here, or
●●●●ㅤㅤless. Punctuation marks are also tricky, hyphens in particular (Sphinx's logical
●●●●ㅤㅤNOT operator).
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ A username like 'GH-02, for example, is longer than two letters, but the
●●●●ㅤㅤhyphen causes Sphinx to see it as two two-letter strings. Non-searchable.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ 99% of the time Sphinx's rules don't bother us. To even find them you have
●●●●ㅤㅤto go back to the original documentation, which is not on FA, of course. Those
●●●●ㅤㅤdocs got a real close look.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ And there's no fix. If a person is listed, and the search query links don't
●●●●ㅤㅤfunction, you can't use those links to call up that person's work. So a workaround
●●●●ㅤㅤhad to be installed.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ A couple of separate list pages were set up, one for writers and one for
●●●●ㅤㅤpoets. If a name is non-searchable, the link beside it takes you to one of these
●●●●ㅤㅤpages.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ And that name will be there, along with a table of that person's work. Sphinx
●●●●ㅤㅤwon't cough it up? No prob. A little software can do the job instead, then display
●●●●ㅤㅤit as if a search had been done.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ A non-searchable name doesn't mean the stories and poetry in gallery aren't
●●●●ㅤㅤthere. Getting at them just takes more work. Not difficult, so it's been done.

●●●●ㅤㅤ5) THERE ARE OTHER LINKS HERE. WHAT DO THEY DO?
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ There are six other links of interest.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ1) Link to the main page:
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ The FAWD avatar--like avatars on all subs--is a link to the FAWD main page.
●●●●ㅤㅤ(The graphic logo at the very top of the page is not the avatar.)
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤ2) Next and Prev links:
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ They do as their name suggests, and as the arrows indicate: Moves you up a
●●●●ㅤㅤpage or down a page in a list section. A set of these is at the top of every list page
●●●●ㅤㅤand at the bottom.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ3) The Map Page link:
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ This one's important. No matter what a directory has in it, a user has to be
●●●●ㅤㅤable to look things up. In this case, names. This is what the map pages are for,
●●●●ㅤㅤand each alphabetic section has one.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ A map page gives you a 'high-level' picture of a whole section. Literally,
●●●●ㅤㅤthere's a graphic that shows you the last name found on each page.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Study that, and you can pick out the page where any given name should be
●●●●ㅤㅤlocated. (This idea is lifted straight from how a dictionary is set up, BTW).
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ And below the graphic are numbered links to every page in that section.
●●●●ㅤㅤClick, and go straight to that page.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ A proper look-up function cannot be installed on the FAWD; no access to
●●●●ㅤㅤFA's server. The Map Pages come pretty close. Every list page in every section
●●●●ㅤㅤcarries links to that section's map page.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ There's also a main map page, arranged similar to the table of alphabetic
●●●●ㅤㅤlinks, that let's you get at any map page you want. See the main page for the link
●●●●ㅤㅤto this, or see any map page.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ See here: FAWD MAIN MAP PAGE
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Useful trick: Open the main map page in one browser window, while you're
●●●●ㅤㅤsurfing the FAWD in another. If you want to look someone up, the main map
●●●●ㅤㅤpage is right there, no waiting.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤ4) The List Index Page link:
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ While the Map pages are handy, there is another way of doing what they
●●●●ㅤㅤdo. And it may be handier? Depends. But the List Index pages are a lot more
●●●●ㅤㅤcompact (and maybe a little easier to work with).
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Index is index: Just a series of tables--and links--for each alphabetic
●●●●ㅤㅤsection. The Map pages show you one section at a time. Each table on the List
●●●●ㅤㅤIndex page does the same. Except that they're *all* here in one place.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Bonus: Both the Writers and the Poets sections are displayed side-by-side.
●●●●ㅤㅤAs opposed to the Map pages, where you gotta click to move back and forth.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Upshot: Visit the List Index pages and you can virtually scroll through the
●●●●ㅤㅤentire FAWD. Well, no virtually about it. One click, and you can go to any FAWD
●●●●ㅤㅤlist page you want. The tables shows you the first and last names on each page,
●●●●ㅤㅤwhich is a bit of an improvement over the Map pages (but the Map pages are
●●●●ㅤㅤarguably faster to use).
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Since there are a helluva lot of furs listed, the whole List Index takes four
●●●●ㅤㅤpages: #1 = A to F (and the Num/Other pages); #2 = G to O; #3 = P to V; #4
●●●●ㅤㅤ= W to Z.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Alla this may or may not make up for the lack of a proper look-up function.
●●●●ㅤㅤBut put together, the List Index pages and the Map pages do allow you to find
●●●●ㅤㅤyour way around this behemoth without too much fuss or wasted effort.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ The point, after all, is to be able to find stories and poetry you wanna read.
●●●●ㅤㅤPoint made.
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤ6) The FAQ-Ruleset link:
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ While the FAWD is not a website, it still needs one of the most critical
●●●●ㅤㅤfeatures of a website: A help function.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ In lieu of that, the FAQ-Ruleset was written, which may or may not come
●●●●ㅤㅤclose. Links to the FAQ-Ruleset are on every list page.
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Seriously, a proper help function really should be worked out [somehow],
●●●●ㅤㅤsince the FAQ-Ruleset cannot be better than a second-best solution.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Still, if there are further questions about the FAWD, and how and why it
●●●●ㅤㅤworks, the answers should be in there, and hopefully they should be easy to
●●●●ㅤㅤfind.
●●●●ㅤㅤ
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ If not, don't hesitate, and send a message. Rest assured, new questions,
●●●●ㅤㅤthat nobody's ever thought of before, will be pounced on quite eagerly.

●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤ4) SPEAKING OF LETTERS, WHAT ARE THOSE 'ALL GGG MMM AAA' THINGS
●●●●ㅤㅤ ON EVERY LIST ENTRY?
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ The keys to the kingdom, is what they are. The FAWD is not merely a giant
●●●●ㅤㅤlist of names.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Those are search query links. Click one, and a fast search is done on that
●●●●ㅤㅤperson's name, no different from what the Search page would do.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ And what comes back is: A page of search results. The stories that person
●●●●ㅤㅤhas posted. Or poetry.
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ By installing these search query links the FAWD gives you one-click access to
●●●●ㅤㅤvirtually all stories and poetry on FA, one writer or poet at a time (whether a fur is
●●●●ㅤㅤactually a writer or poet or not).
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ ALL calls up all work that's posted. GGG retrieves general-rated work. MMM
●●●●ㅤㅤfor mature-rated and AAA for adult-rated.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Beside the links are counts of the stories or poems available in each
●●●●ㅤㅤcategory. No number means that link does nothing, 'cause there's nothing to find.
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Search query links are not exactly new to FA (see the keyword links on every
●●●●ㅤㅤsub), but using them this way is very new. Sphinx, FA search engine, is capable
●●●●ㅤㅤof some neat tricks; we won't turn this one down.

●●●●ㅤㅤ3) WHAT'S THE BIG TABLE OF LETTERS? AaA, BbB, CcC...
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Since FA's server isn't involved in any of this, navigating around this
●●●●ㅤㅤbehemoth cannot be done the usual way. Such as maybe a drop-down box or
●●●●ㅤㅤmenu, then you choose where to go, then click and you're there.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ So every list page needs this fixed table of alphabetic links. AaA takes you
●●●●ㅤㅤto the A section of names, BbB to the B names, CcC to the C names, and so on.
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ On a Writers list page this table takes you to other pages in the Writers
●●●●ㅤㅤsection. On a Poets page, to other Poets pages. A link on every list page will
●●●●ㅤㅤswitch you back and forth between the two sides.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ In theory, no matter where you are on the FAWD, a few mouse clicks is all it
●●●●ㅤㅤtakes to get to anywhere else. That's how you'd expect things to work on a
●●●●ㅤㅤwebsite. Might as well do it here too.

●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤ2) SO THIS PAGE IS PART OF A DIRECTORY. HOW IS IT PUT TOGETHER?
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Granted, just looking at a list page doesn't exactly give this away.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ The FAWD is actually two directories under one roof: Writers and Poets.
●●●●ㅤㅤThose who've written story posts, they're listed on the Writers side. Those who've
●●●●ㅤㅤwritten poetry posts, logically on the Poets side.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Some people have both stories and poetry. Their names will typically be
●●●●ㅤㅤfound on both lists. A link beside a list entry indicates this, and will take you to
●●●●ㅤㅤthat name on the other side.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Whuffo this two-part structure? Helps to give those who've written poetry
●●●●ㅤㅤmore exposure, since poetry matters.
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Every list page is labelled as either Writers or Poets; shouldn't be too hard to
●●●●ㅤㅤspot. More important is how the FAWD is subdivided.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ As in, both the Writers and Poets lists are broken down into alphabetic
●●●●ㅤㅤsections. Ie., names that start with A, names with B, with C, D, E, etc.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ On FA we need one more section: Num/Other, standing for names that start
●●●●ㅤㅤwith numbers or non-alpha characters.
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●
●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Every list page within a section is numbered--ie., M1, M2, M3, etc--since it'd
●●●●ㅤㅤbe nice to know where you are within a section. The page number labels will also
●●●●ㅤㅤtell you this, and how many pages there are in a section.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ So will the table of page links, planted just above the names on every page.
●●●●ㅤㅤIf, say, you're in the B section of names, the page links will let you jump to any B
●●●●ㅤㅤpage with one click.
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Only so many ways to do a directory. The FAWD isn't really up to anything
●●●●ㅤㅤradical here (apart from it being on FA in the first place).

●●●●ㅤㅤ1) THIS LOOKS LIKE A WEBPAGE. ON *FA??*
●●●●
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ The FAWD is definitely on FA. You're not looking at a webpage. You're
●●●●ㅤㅤlooking at a regular submission comment box.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ Meaning there's no HTML in use here. What's in that comment box is...
●●●●ㅤㅤmundane ordinary text. But intensely well-formatted. Same as with any
●●●●ㅤㅤsubmission on FA, ordinary text is all you can put in a comment box.
●●●●
●●●●ㅤㅤㅤㅤ The FAWD's software generated the list pages, then posted them all into the
●●●●ㅤㅤright submission comment box. In other words FA's server delivered the page to
●●●●ㅤㅤyou but FA's server didn't make it.
