This could be a power metal intro. Yes, I've stooped so low as to get the inspiration from a song title from a mathematics webcomic - it really is that tragic. But the general idea for this came about well before the title... I think I must have started it at some point in 2008, and the story was gradually pieced together since then, but it wasn't until after my run of other releases from this album that I really got to work on it.
And I'd intended it to be the 'epic' of the album from the start, but I really wasn't expecting it to become my longest single song ever. (There's one submission here that's longer - My Kingdom which I released at the start of 2007 - but it's more like a collection of songs released under one title). Modplug deals in rows and patterns rather than time - so it was a surprise to me as well when I rendered it out and saw that it had grown to be nearly twenty minutes long.
Somewhat like the comic I mentioned, this describes a determined journey (the song could loosely be broken up into about five minutes of introduction, ten minutes of the journey, and another five minute section for the return) - you might see various themes, lyrics and titles from throughout the rest of the album returning here. Enjoy the journey. :)
This song's length means that it has to be compressed a huge amount to fit under the site's size limit. You can listen to a less compressed version on my Bandcamp account!
Lyrics
I am a writer of this world
And I will shape it in my image
The air, water, fire and the earth
Can all be crafted by my hand
I can take every soul and draw them in
The lives I make become my children
But here in the back of my own mind
I hear a voice that I can't find
Far away, through the sky
I have seen your face
And you are calling out my name
To come through you will try
But you don't yet have a life
Till I draw you here to me
So could I learn to fly
And reach toward the lands beyond this sky
Leave the world I made for them behind
A journey now to find
This life that was not made within my mind
Could I reach out to you
I will find the fragments of your soul
Throughout the universe
To reach and gather them through time
No matter how long the way
I will draw to this world
Any time, anywhere
I will find you
Why do you want to come to me
Where did you come from, what's your story
I feel I could know just who you are
If our two lives could only cross
And I take every moment I can find
Transforming wonder to obsession
To gather the writings of the past
And piece by piece I find the story of your life
I see the past that you've been given
By the god that made your world
The suffering and every aspect of your tragedy
And as I turn each page of life
My mind is made up more and more
I want to be the one to save you from this cruelty
So now I'm going to fly
To reach toward the lands beyond this sky
Leave the world I made for them behind
And now I have to find
This life that was not made within my mind
It's my promise to you
I will find the fragments of your soul
Throughout the universe
To reach and gather them through time - I will fly
No matter how long the way
I will draw to this world
Any time, anywhere
I will find you
Your voice is the first of the pieces that I find
It's carried through the air of unreality
Already in my grasp as it's projected to this world
I only have to follow to its source
Now I can feel your power as I hold
Here in my hands, a fragment of your soul
And hearing your call I look towards the path ahead
Through the skies my search for you goes on
The body is the tie to earth
It's free of this corruption of the world
Unspoiled, untouchable
And flying free until I give you form
Like rivers of the truth
The pieces of the past will flow as one
The waters rise and fall
Converge and drift apart
I take your memories
And strip them of the world you used to know
A new beginning now
The fragments that I leave to form your mind
Always further out, I'm getting further from my home
I'm never looking back, because I'm never on my own
Towards the distant light I'll fly
The fire of your angel eye
The spirit of your soul revealed to me
Just... like the machinist
I... I can command this chaos
Here... taking it into my own hands
Now... all of the fragments
They... centre around your precious heart
And there is just one last piece left
Carry on
I - I've always been denied
But now I'm taking life
Into my own two hands - and all these
Memories of what they did to you
They spur me on - I'm coming for you
My queen
All my children
Left in my world
Now you'll be only mine as well
And here on the shore
At the edge of the universe
Your final gift is life
Now - I hold them in my hands, forever near to me
The precious fragments of your soul
And now my journey is done, I'll return to my world
Through the darkness, you're coming with me
I return, I'm coming from the sky
And the world has decayed without my hand
We're walking through the ruin
But now, it's only you that matters
I walk over the desert
The forest turned to cold dark sand
Then crawl up to the hills
With the fragments glowing in my hand
At the top of the highest mountain
I look out to the blackened sky
You are gone, and I don't know your name to call you back
I build a shrine
The highest point on earth reserved for you
I turn away
And I walk down from the mountain
Towards the remnants of the world
I gave it up for you - but still I
Hope to see you somewhere in the sky
My world has needed me
Without each other there, we cannot live
I'll rebuild it and never leave again
And still I'm waiting here
I'll stay so you can find and come to me
It's my promise to you
From the ground I'm watching over you for all eternity
The precious fragments of your soul
Lying silent and still, till I bring you to life
At the moment you choose to come back to me
So I'll wait for you forever here within this universe
And hope it wasn't just a dream
And though your image is gone
If you wish to return
I'll be here, I will wait
For as long as it takes
In the end, after all
I will find you

Thanks so much for saying :) It's amazing to be told that my music can have that effect. The 8:45 section was actually the first of the instrumentals that was written, I still have the fragment of it in Guitar Pro somewhere... and I was really hoping that I could get the 14:15 section to work, so it's wonderful to see it mentioned!
Well, you've finally completely outdone yourself.
I noticed that the lyrics randomly title drop almost every other song on the album (actually, every single title except One Perfect Soul, though there souls that may or may not be perfect, and you made up for it by even including Promise) even though the actual song meanings behind the titles might not quite match up...on the other hand, it's not like you could easily work the theme of something like Ängel Eye into this one..!
And do I hear subtle musical references to the other songs as well? I was wholly subconsciously expecting the solo at around 12:15 to lead into "And united as we're searching...." (Then again, something about the syllable count makes me mentally fill in that one with "Give yourself to this corruption" when I hear it, so maybe it's just that all your songs are just melting together in my head.) If I'm not just imagining this, then you've achieved the remarkable feat of having V: The New Mythology Suite levels of song references built on each other on an album that's not a tightly-connected concept album/metal opera with a single narrative like that!
This...really is epic, and is a perfect summation of the entire rest of the album thus far.

I'm very pleased that you noticed the name-drops :) There's a pattern to them that I want to leave to be noticed for the most part, but I'll tell you about when we next talk! I had intended to include six definite song titles - I must admit that I hadn't actually noticed that I'd included "Promise" in that list as well by using the word, so it's a shame I also didn't accidentally mention the word "portal" (as I later called the introduction of Unreality) - however, to answer your question about musical references, that's in there musically instead in the section that starts at 8:20. Similarly, One Perfect Soul isn't referenced by name, but in the whole structure of the song (compare the outro of it to the order of the sections during the journey...)
Thanks a lot as ever for your commentary, it's really special to know that I can impress a fellow power metal fan. :) Scoring three favourites at once on your list, knowing how exclusive you keep it, is something that I can think of as something of an achievement. And I've got to say thank you for that journal post as well - this song lasted something like 40 minutes on the front page, I think, but I'd love it if it could draw some more people in!

Half of my keeping my favorite list so small (it's my favorite list, not my everything I happen to enjoy somewhat list..!) is exceptional pickiness in adding things in the first place, and the other half is jealous pruning whenever I do add anything new. As of when I write this, you are the only person to be on my list three times, primarily because the other person who was on my list three times lost one of them to make room for this. Thus, no promises that all of them will stay there forever, but they definitely reflect my favorites for now...and yes, not everyone can say that there was a time they were on my list three times, so congratulations for that. :)
Whoops, I'm sorry, that's not entirely correct--someone did have three and lost one to make room for this, but that doesn't make you the only person with three as of when I write this--you currently share that honor with
its_a_trap. But, you know, still. :)
its_a_trap. But, you know, still. :)
I understand the fleetingness of it :) It's unusual (unique, actually, I would hazard) that you treat the Favorites list quite so literally - as, in fact, your favourites at a specific time, and it makes me think of why we call them "favorites" when they're more like... well, everything you happen to enjoy somewhat, or want to have bookmarked. My own actual favourites change must change very frequently, though my Favorites list is... I suppose you could call it "Things that I think are amazing and deserve to be displayed on a page where someone might find them and they might be seen for longer than just on the front page".
Listening to your last song, I had recognize some of your previous' riffs. Actually, I feel this whole song as an original combinated with a resume of the entire album. That's HUGE Oo
This is a great song anyway, I really enjoyed it.
(But may a little bit too long for me.)

You're right, it does have a couple of musical references to earlier songs - though I think that a lot of the slower sections of this one might have turned out unintentionally quite similar to the last because of my writing them so close together! The length definitely got out of hand in a big way - usually I try to split massive songs into smaller sections, but this was the first that I felt actually counted as one definite single song. Thanks a lot for saying that you enjoyed it - getting comments like this really means a lot to me :)
Ahahahah! I'm a HUGE fan of yours!
Sincerely, I really wonder why you're not at FA's top already (and coming from me, really exigeant on music/art generally, it means really a lot). I heard yours song in loop, on bus, walking to school; I even play with the MIDIs and my software since I discovered the really amazing Ikodo's Unreality mix. Really dude. You just ROCK!
But this is not only a matter of music. Your texts, especially "The Machinist" and "One Perfect Soul" are simply... Well... Excellent? Moving? Breathtaking? That's why when
born, I immediately contacted you in order to propose you to join
I think you'd understand: I can talk (write actually, but bah!) for a loong moment (and text) just to tell one thing: you're, according to me, with
Thyrion and
Wolfgang-Flo (who's gone due to drama... ) a god of FA music. (Did I really need as much lines to say that? Mhhhh yeah xD)
... And one day, I'll be as good as you ><

Those are two artists that I've never heard of, actually, but I will certainly have to look at them! I don't consider myself 'better' than anyone else and there are certainly artists that I really admire as well - but knowing that someone looks up to and enjoys my music that much is very flattering indeed, thank you :) Especially as you mention the lyrics, because even though I've been putting them up for a while now, it's those that I'm most nervous about showing anyone (though oddly casting them out to the general Internet is fine) - they can really describe what you're thinking.
I think that I'm... fairly visible as far as music goes on FA - I'm not among the massively watched artists or anything, but I have a few people who I know really listen to and enjoy my music. Nevertheless, more exposure through
composers and passing links on through other people's journals and so on is always very welcome! :)

Thank you so much :) If it kept your attention for that length of time then that's a sign I'm doing something right!
I'm actually trying to put together a short version/"radio edit" to go along with it, too, but I find myself unable to edit it down to lower than eight and a half minutes...

It seems to happen mostly accidentally... in my experience, the worst thing I can do is actually try to set out from the beginning to write something long, because it quickly gets overwhelming. Some things just... keep growing, and I knew this was going to be a ten-minuter when it began to grow together, but I hadn't expected a twenty-minuter instead :) So thanks a lot, it's great to know that people think it worked!
I came across this music of yours first todays evening. Nicely done, another fave from you! :3 Hard decision cause I try to manage my fave list somewhat like how Kjorteo mentioned above except for that I never delete stuff. I somewhat resolved not to include more than a few works from anyone and to only include something if it stands out in some aspect compared to previous faved works of the same author (Check it out: I still have less than 80). So here goes your third! :D
What I liked in this composition much is how you did the transients, that how the flow sometimes halted and how a new theme developed out from the previous. It gives much more depth to a composition in my opinion if it's not the same through the entire piece, and this is such a composition. Sometimes it goes all aloud like an unstoppable train, and then suddenly stops to some silent, sort of calm mood to develop somewhere once again. It is interesting, this is for what I like for example Vangelis, and this is for what I like this piece. It contained many new inventions compared to your old tunes I listened which is a good development. It was nice though as well that at the strong parts I could recall your old style, that sometimes it sounded somewhat like Albion, the first thing on my fave list :3

Thank you so much :) My Amiga-ish style was more an accident of evolution than deliberate, but I've grown quite attached to it now and I'm glad that other people appreciate it as well! My submissions seem to have slowed down recently, but hopefully I will get something new posted at some point as well...
I'm not American either, and I think my English is rather better for it ;) Your English is great!
When I started writing music, it was to go into some games that I was writing at the time (which were never finished). That was how I got into music composition, and when I started writing my own full songs as well, I kept using the same software that I had done for games - Modplug Tracker - giving it this computerish sound.

I've tried a couple of times - the results haven't been that good :) Perhaps I'll put together something experimental and more suited to my voice, some day.
If you want to buy the album, it's here! Thank you so much for your comments, either way :)
