Russell is a gunslinger/marksman in his early 20s Despite his skinny appearance, he is more than capable of wielding his weapons of choice: his deceased parents’ modified Ranger Sequoias. He is ambidextrous but generally shoots right handed. He is a showoff and makes decent caps performing trick shots and other marksmanship feats at playing cards & coins. One thing he doesn’t show off is his lightning draw, this is mostly to prevent involvement in shootouts with gunslingers; he has no desire to needlessly kill others.
He calls his Ranger Sequoia pistols 'The Bear Paws.' His father's pistol was modified to handle 6 shots and has a heavier frame (good for pistol-whipping.) He uses this pistol for speed shooting and when he needs to do a quick draw. The pistol his mother used was modified for marksmanship and has the same heavier frame (in this case to absorb some recoil) and a robust hunting scope. This is his pistol of choice for long range and precision shooting. He also an old Schofield pistol he calls 'Little Bear'. It was his first pistol, a gift from his parents, and it is kept in immaculate condition. While nowhere near as powerful as the .45-70 Sequoias, it is able to be concealed and makes for a good backup weapon.
Russel's primary occupation is as a guide/guard for merchant caravans. Despite his age, he is well liked for his effort to see everyone safely to their destination. He also does his best to pass on some of the pistol skills his parents taught him to those in the caravans, earning him a significant amount of respect.
While outspoken & cocky most of the time, Russel has his first crush on another caravan guard named Rose Holcomb and can barely speak around her. Rose is very much aware of his infatuation (and is amused by it) but pretends to be oblivious. In reality, she likes him as well and is waiting for him to ask her on a date.
