The solstice is a time of revelry for most, and a time of fortune in many clans. For once every one hundred years, a phoenix egg is laid and hatched, changing the lives of all who have borne witness to it.
There are two kinds of phoenix that are created from these eggs, and they depend on when the egg hatches. If it hatches on the day of the Summer Solstice, then a phoenix of good fortune and prosperity is brought forth. These firebirds act as guardians of their clan's fortunes, and ensure that all things worked for are successful. They are a rebirth from stagnation, a blaze of happiness and revival from a slump of ill-luck.
But then there is the phoenix born on the Winter Solstice. These, who bear fires of purification and destruction, lay waste to all weakness and exacerbate ill-fortune. If there is anything built upon poor foundations, anything that is steeped in falsity or sown wrongly in this phoenix's presence, that thing shall crumble, and burn all who had a hand in its making. A Winter Solstice phoenix spells a rebirth of a different sort; of violent upheaval and breaking foundations. When all is said and done, and the wasteland of their clan's mistakes is inexorably made manifest... there is nothing one can do except pick up the pieces and try to rebuild better...
... Or abandon hope, and burn away.
