For all things mix in certain volumes, so does tragedy mix with peace in such strange, contradicting ways. For a dragon whose life is built upon serenity, there is little to do except gaze into the horizon and search for what would make him feel.
There exists a dragon whose magic acts similarly to the phoenix, known as a Gilded Dragon. These dragons exist to spread happiness and good fortune among their allies, but only so long as they themselves are happy. So it would be good fortune indeed should one come across an egg floating downstream, the aura of it soaked and pouring with misery and despondence. 'Just let me die' it cries, in the misery it carries, if not in speech.
For what guardian of his people's happiness could possibly let such a miserable creature pass on, without even considering how to make things right? Not a Gilded Dragon, for he would certainly take the egg and carry it close, sheltering it in his warmth and care, and bathing it in his light and serenity. He could not know, at the time, the precious gift he had been given. For although he lived to give for others in the sense of duty a king has for their subjects. He had never known a reason to live for himself, or a camaraderie to inspire him to become better. And in time, he would have it, in the phoenix who would one day hatch from that egg.
